MICHIGAN, USA — Buckle up for a rollercoaster ride from Mother Nature the next 24 hours – gusty winds, falling temperatures and the return of lake effect snow.

On a broad scale, a strengthening low pressure system will traverse through the Great Lakes this evening through Wednesday. Here in West Michigan, a sharp cold front will arrive overnight, sweeping through the region by early Wednesday. As expected, the current mild airmass will exit and be replaced by a much colder one.

All of this is nothing unusual for late November, but it's a 24-hour stretch where travel impacts will be felt.

WIND

The Wind Advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts upwards of 45 mph are expected. The main hazard with the gusty winds will be isolated power outages.

Direction of the wind will turn to the west overnight into Wednesday as the cold front sweeps across the region.

FALLING TEMPERATURES

Mild temperatures Tuesday into the nighttime hours will come to a screeching halt by early Wednesday as the cold front arrives. Temperatures will plummet from the 50s to around 30° in a matter of 12 hours, from midnight to noon Wednesday.

Factoring in the wind, it’ll feel even colder on Wednesday, with wind chill values in the 10s.

RAIN TO LAKE EFFECT

Scattered rain showers will be commonplace through the evening hours before quickly exiting West Michigan overnight. As the colder air settles on Wednesday, lake effect snow showers will take over throughout the day.

Snow amounts will be marginal, around an inch or less for most. In localized places, upwards of 2” are possible, but no heavy amounts of snow are expected. Gusty winds, however, will create visibility issues.

IMPACTS

Travel impacts will be likely at times Wednesday as temperatures drop and lake effect snow blossoms. Icy spots will be the main concern as a result, both from the snow and any water refreezing on the roads. Gusty winds will further travel impacts, with varying visibility a concern.
