Eureka Twp., Mich. (WZZM) - Looks alone don't do Tom Faussett's 1991 GEO Metro justice.

For an electrical engineer and fuel saving consumer, the Eureka Township man's car is a thing of beauty under the hood.

Faussett and his son converted the Metro into a fully electric car using parts found on the internet.

The Metro is powered by a 10 horsepower motor fueled by 14 lead-acid batteries usually used to power golf carts.

Faussett's car can travel nearly 60 miles on a full charge cycle which typically lasts between 8-10 hours.

The car is not without it's flaws, however. It's tops the spedometer at around 45 mph, not exactly interstate ready.

"It's not really designed for long trips," said Faussett. "It's great for trips around town."

With gas at $2.50 per gallon, it costs a 25 mpg engine $.10 per mile to operate. Faussett says his car only costs $.0152 per mile to run being powered by electricity, nearly nine-times more effective to run than the traditionally powered gas automobile.

The electric car project cost Faussett and his son around $6,000 and took nearly six months to complete.
