WHITE CLOUD, Mich. (WZZM) Work is underway on a new jail in Newaygo County.

Dignitaries including the sheriff broke ground this morning on a $6.4-million jail and sheriff's office expansion project.

More than 13,000 square feet is being added to the current jail on Williams Street in White Cloud.  When finished a year from now, the jail will be able to handle 68 additional inmates and create several new jobs.

Mike Mercer is the Newaygo County Sheriff, "There will be a number of construction jobs on the building process from now until November (2010). There will be some more corrections officers jobs, that will be long term. And some financial security."

Crews will also demolish the current sheriff's office to make way for a new one story office building.
