13 Reads: The Literacy Center of West Michigan host community literacy summit

13 On Your Side has launched a long-term literacy initiative called "13 Reads." It's designed to create a community of readers.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — 13 On Your Side has launched a long-term literacy initiative called "13 Reads." It's designed to create a community of readers and do something about the lackluster literacy rate here in West Michigan.

The Literacy Center of West Michigan is committed to bringing about a just and vibrant West Michigan through the power of literacy.

The Literacy Center works with adults, both native speakers of English and English language learners, who read below a 9th grade level and want to improve their literacy. We are at the forefront of adult education. Our programs meet learners where they are with one-on-one tutoring, employment-focused classes, and family literacy opportunities, all at no cost to the learner.

The 2020 Community Literacy Summit on Friday, February 28, 2020 will focus on the development of language and literacy skills in young children from birth to age five, specifically those that lead to kindergarten readiness and grade level reading success.

The Summit is designed to bring about discussion and action around literacy readiness skills for young children in West Michigan.

The Summit will include a keynote speaker, two morning breakout sessions, facilitated networking, and a closing panel discussion during lunch. This year's keynote speaker will be Dr. Keisha Siriboe, Director of the ROX Institute and former Director of Content and Programming for Reading is Fundamental (RIF).
