Kick-start your spring cleaning and get organized

Getting organized is an important part of spring cleaning.

When we think about spring cleaning, we think about getting all the dust bunnies out from under the bed and behind the couch, or of finally opening the windows to let fresh air in. However, spring is also the perfect time to take a look at what you have in your home... and make some decisions about what you need.

Getting out everything and putting it back can help you clear out unnecessary items and clean out your cupboards, closets, and even that bin under the bed.

Then, you can organize a garage sale later with the items you have found you don't need. When the weather gets a bit warmer, you'll have the excuse to clean out that part of the house so you can sell everything.

Sheila Gunneson joined us in studio to talk about some ways you can make the process more simple. She is a professional organizer, and knows the benefits of everything having its proper place. Her company is called Consider It Done. You can check out the Facebook page here.

Here is her advice for getting started.

PURGE. Empty rooms, closets, drawers and the like of things you don't need and don't use. Make three piles. Keep, throw away, and sale. After a yard or garage sale, anything that's left should be donated.

TO BEGIN, BEGIN. Go one room at a time and stay focused. As you take everything out and organize it, clean your fixtures and organization tools too.

TOUCH EVERYTHING IN THE ROOM. Start at the top, cleaning the ceiling fans, and light fixtures and making sure to get all the cobwebs that may have cropped up in the corners. Wipe down walls and faceplates, baseboards and other fixtures. Make sure to move all of the furniture and clean under it. This is your chance to deep clean everything so take it down, shake it out, put it through the washer, whatever it needs.

Use the same routine in every room of your home, one room at a time.

PICK A TIME WITH FEW INTERRUPTIONS. Don't start a room right when the kids are about to get off the bus, or when you are expecting the cable person to arrive.
