GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — UPDATE 2:00 p.m., Friday: The milk has been cleaned up and the freeway is now open.

The S-curve between Wealthy Street and Market Avenue is completely shut down for cleanup after a milk tanker truck overturned and started leaking.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. Friday. Michigan State Police troopers said the tanker started leaking milk onto the roadway after overturning. The road has to be fully shut down for environmental cleanup, as milk can be toxic for fish if it is washed into the water system, troopers say.

The driver of the truck was uninjured in the crash. Speed is believed to have been a factor.

Cleanup is expected to take up to four hours to complete. Drivers are encouraged to find an alternate route.
