Hastings Area Schools are closed on Monday, March 5 due to a threat at the the high school.

In a message that was sent to the school community, Superintendent Carrie Duits said that the district has been working with multiple law enforcement agencies to investigate this over the weekend.

However, Hastings City Police recommended that the district remain closed on Monday while the investigation is concluded.

All schools in the district are closed, including CERC and daycare.

"As we have shared in the past, safety and security are our top priorities," said Duits.

In Kent County a neighboring county to Barry, law enforcement has seen a rise in the number of false threats made toward schools since the Parkland shooting. At the end of February, Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker reminded the public that false threats are a crime.
