One person dead, two children hurt in hit and run crash

A 33-year-old mother is dead after a hit and run accident in Cedar Springs Friday evening.

UPDATE: The driver has been arrested and is awaiting arraignment.

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. -- According to the Kent County Sheriff's Department, a 33-year-old Nelson Township woman is dead after a hit and run crash on Friday, Sept. 15.

The incident happened near the intersection of 15 Mile and Ritchie Avenue in Cedar Springs just before 8:30 p.m.

The Nelson Township woman was driving westbound on 15 Mile Road with her 5-year-old twin boys. Their car was hit by a northbound 2015 F150 pickup truck, authorities say.

The mother was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Her two boys were taken to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck ran away from the crash, according to a news release from the sheriff's department. Deputies tried to search the area with multiple canine units and were assisted by a Michigan State Police helicopter for several hours, however, the driver was not found.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, the news release states.
