One Good Thing: Dave Rue Scholarship Fund

The scholarship -- named for the late West Michigan referee -- helps underprivileged kids get started officiating hockey.

Today's One Good Thing is an upcoming fundraiser to help underprivileged kids get into officiating hockey. And, it's being done in the name of a beloved West Michigan referee we lost earlier this year.

Dave Rue passed away from lung cancer in February. As someone who knew him personally, I can tell you I've rarely seen someone so loved by so many people.

In his memory, there is now the Dave Rue Scholarship Fund. It helps low-income kids get set up with registration and equipment costs to start refereeing through the Griffins Youth Foundation.

This Friday night, the GVSU men's hockey team is hosting a benefit game for the fund on Dec.15 at 9 p.m. at Georgetown Ice Center. There will be raffles, a bake sale, kids who are already in the program will be there and you can make donations if you like.

So, today, One Good Thing goes to everyone behind the Dave Rue Scholarship Fund. I'll have more information on the fund within this story on our website. And, Rooster, we still miss you, buddy.
