Senior Wellness: Help is available to full-time caregivers

Classes are offered every month and are held at Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Caregiving can be both rewarding and challenging. The Family Caregiver University, a program of the Caregiver Resource Network, provides practical education and support to caregivers in West Michigan.

Classes are offered every month and are held at Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan. Classes are open to individuals providing care to their family member(s). Individuals are requested to register prior to attending each class.

There are a variety of topics that are covered with the hopes of giving caregivers the information they need to continue helping their loved ones.

The next class being offered is next week Thursday, April 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. The topic is Community Resources A to Z: Understanding In-Home Care Options.

This class with cover a variety of topics including Medicare, Medicaid, in-home care programs and funding, community resources, and ideas of how to be proactive in pursuing services. This class will hopefully introduce some new ideas to caregivers that they can apply to their unique situations.

This class has a lot of valuable information that can help individuals and caregivers better understand all of the options available to them, especially when needs being to change and more help is needed at home. So often, people would like to continue living in their own homes if possible and when things become more difficult, they are not sure where to turn or what is available to help them. This class will cover different ideas including in-home personal care, housekeeping, respite services (which gives a caregiver a break), and how these types of services are paid for.

Every situation is unique but it is beneficial for all caregivers to have an understanding of the services that can benefit them and their loved ones.
