Attorney General Dana Nessel now looking into death of Samuel Sterling, Ben Crump representing family

Sterling was near the intersection of 52nd Street and Eastern Avenue when he was hit and killed by an unmarked MSP vehicle.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With new attention focusing on the circumstances surrounding the death of Samuel Sterling, his cousin Jemar said it's renewed some hope for their family.

"It's a solution towards what happened to my cousin Samuel Sterling," said Jemar. "For Ben Crump to be representing us, and Dana Nessel taking on the investigation, it kind of put my family at ease."

"We just want to see the video, we want to see what transpired," said Jemar. "So we will have to deal with speculation. We want to see how long did it take for my cousin to get medical attention. We want to see what was the accident they saw."

On Thursday, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced they would be reviewing the investigation into the Grand Rapids area man's death.

In a statement, Nessel said in part:

"My public integrity unit has investigated dozens of police-involved incidents and is dedicated to providing a thorough and just review and resolution in each one."

On April 17, Sterling was near the intersection of 52nd Street and Eastern Avenue when he was spotted by the Michigan State Police Sixth District Fugitive Team looking for him on outstanding felony warrants.

After running from officers, the 25-year-old was hit and killed by an unmarked MSP vehicle.

Now, a week after his death, the family is being represented by attorney Ben Crump.

Former Kent County Commissioner Robert Womack, who has been working with the family during the investigation, said he's been in contact with the Tallahassee-based civil rights attorney in the days following Sterling's death.

"He just tells me he knows how much pain they're going through," said Womack. "Because of all the other families that he's dealt with."

In a social media post, Crump said in part:

"Samuel's parents will never be able to hold their son again and his own children will grow up without a father. We demand answers and are seeking justice and accountability on behalf of Samuel's family."

Crump will be coming to Grand Rapids Friday for a press conference and to meet with the family for the first time at 4 p.m.
