Meijer's shop and scan app put to the test

Meijer's new 'shop and scan' app might change the way you shop these days.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - If you haven't heard, now you will; Meijer has a new app that might change the way you shop.

We told you about Meijer's new scan and shop app yesterday. It's supposed to make shopping easier, but, does it really save time?

13 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Sarah Sell decided to put this app to the test at the Meijer on Alpine Avenue, where Customer Experience Director Stephanie Brackenridge could provide some assistance.

When it comes to fresh produce, like bananas or apples, you weigh the items and type in the code at the scales located throughout the department. Then, print up a price sticker and scan.

For any alcohol you try to purchase, you can scan the item, but you will get carded at checkout.

While not everyone will enjoy scanning and bagging their own groceries. This app does have its benefits. While using the app, you can see your cart's total price before buying.

"Our Meijer customers love that the total is there for you as your shopping, so you can budget as you go through the store," says Brackenridge. The app is also supposed to make checkout quicker and easier.

Once you're finished shopping, head to the front of the store were your cart is tallied. Because Sarah was new to the service, the clerk looked in her bags. Meijer says clerks will do random checks to prevent fraud.

The app can be found under "Meijer Express Checkout." It will eventually be changed to "Shop and Scan" this summer.

It’s currently in 7 Meijer stores in West Michigan, with more coming soon.
