Sgt. Jeff Case and other members of the Emergency Response Team surround a home on Merritt Street looking for possible suspects in a shooting that wounded two teens early Sunday, April 15, 2018.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - A 17-year-old boy was critically injured and another teen injured in a shooting early Sunday in Battle Creek.

Battle Creek police said the shooting was reported at 3:27 a.m. at 69 Merritt St. The 17-year-old was taken to Bronson Battle Creek and then to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, according to Detective Sgt. Todd Elliott, supervisor of the detective bureau.

A 15-year-old boy was shot on the arm and torso and was found at his home on Sanderson Street, more than a dozen blocks from the shooting scene. He was taken to Bronson Battle Creek for treatment.

Elliott said police first were called to a report of shots fired and moments later received a call about a 15-year-old teenager near Poplar and Cherry streets also reporting a shooting.

That teen led officers to Merritt Street where they found the injured 17-year-old in the grass near the front of the house.

Elliott said the 17-year-old and the two 15-year-olds had gone to the house but police are not sure why.

"What they were doing there is still under investigation," he said.

The third boy was not injured.

The house was surrounded by police and about 8:45 a.m., after obtaining a search warrant members of the Emergency Response Team forced the front door and entered the home but did not find anyone else inside.
