The Detroit Pistons announced an honorary call-up on Thursday night of Grand Rapids Drive swingman Zeke Upshaw, who died Monday after collapsing during a game Saturday.

Pistons general manager Jeff Bower made the announcement through a press release just before the game against the Washington Wizards at Little Caesars Arena.

“Zeke was a special player for the Grand Rapids Drive and as the (Gatorade) League affiliate for our organization, many of our staffers had the opportunity to spend time with this terrific young man,” Bower said. “His spirit and commitment on and off the court embodied the traits we look for in players who suit up for the Detroit Pistons.

“As we look to memorialize Zeke’s basketball career and continue to support his family during this tragically difficult time, executing an honorary call-up recognizes his standing as a member of the Pistons family.

A medical examiner determined Upshaw suffered a “sudden cardiac death” after collapsing on the court.

Kent County medical examiner Dr. Stephen Cohle conducted an autopsy on Tuesday, though the investigation will continue for a few weeks.

Cohle says he observed some “cardiac abnormalities,” and he’s working to determine the exact type of heart disease.

Upshaw, 26, a Chicago native who played for Illinois State and Hofstra, was undrafted and played internationally in Slovenia and Luxembourg. He spent most of the last two seasons with the Drive, appearing in 75 games primarily as a reserve and averaging 7.6 points.
