Kent County is always looking to provide safety and support for its residents and Juvenile Detention is obviously a vital part of that work. Youth Specialists Julian and Shana showed us around the facility and talked about their roles. Julian explained, "our team’s key responsibility is operating the Juvenile Detention Center, a secure facility that provides temporary care and custody for juveniles awaiting court disposition or transfer." The focus at the Detention Center is on both safety and rehabilitation, helping youths develop better decision-making skills. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of future delinquency among the detained juveniles. The center employs more than 100 trained professionals dedicated to providing education, health services, and behavioral programs essential for the juveniles' growth and reintegration into society.
There are open positions at the Detention Center. Shana explained, "the majority of the workforce consists of Youth Specialists who ensure juvenile safety, guide behavior, and support rehabilitation." The center also employs school staff, including teachers, social workers, and special education professionals for the year-round educational program. Their medical and mental health teams provide essential care to address physical and mental health needs, and they have opportunities available in direct care, administrative roles, program coordination, and other support functions.
A strong, positive workplace culture and generous benefit package make Kent County an appealing career option. Benefits include:
• Comprehensive Coverage: Medical, vision, and dental.
• Pension Plan for long-term financial security.
• Supplemental Investment Options: Extra programs for retirement savings.
• Professional Growth: The county is committed to professional development, offering extensive training to all staff to ensure they meet the highest standards in juvenile care.
