Have an upset stomach? Which do you reach for, the Pepto-Bismol or the Milk of Magnesia? Both are for stomach upset but knowing a little science of both can make a world of difference towards your relieve.
This will be a very cool and educational demonstration/lesson on how both medications work in your stomach.
Science Explanation:
Pepto-Bismol is produced by the Procter & Gamble Company and is advertised to relieving heartburn, sour stomach, and acid indigestion. Milk of Magnesia is most famously known as Phillips' Milk of Magnesia made by the Bayer Corporation and is advertised to relieving stomach discomfort, indigestion, heartburn, and acid indigestion. But just because both treat similar symptoms great caution needs to be taken in choosing the correct medicine. One major difference with both is that Pepto-Bismol provides relief to diarrheal and Milk of Magnesia provides relief to constipation.
Here are a few science facts of both (which I will be demonstrating)
Pepto-Bismol: It contains the heavy metal bismuth (its compound name is bismuth subsalicylate). It coats tissue in the digestive system to slow down the movement of liquids. It has the ability to remove bacteria in your system. It's neutralization of your stomach acid is very weak. It's created in the laboratory. It's pink in color.
Milk of Magnesia: It contains the light metal magnesium (its compound name is magnesium hydroxide). It does a great job neutralizing acid because of the hydroxide ion. It is the magnesium that relieves the constipation with increasing fluids in the intestines. It is both created in the laboratory and found in nature. In water it is white (thus the "milk" in its name).
