Grant Me Hope: Charles

Meet this week's Grant Me Hope child, 12-Year-Old Charles.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — When Charles works with Legos, “everything is awesome” because he’s an artist who is proud of the beautiful projects he can build. While he lists Legos as his favorite toy and one of his favorite things to do with friends, he's also an avid fan of video games.

Charles is no couch potato, though! He looks forward to a day when he can play on a soccer team and challenge his athletic side.

Charles also shows an interest in animals and, in particular, states that he likes dogs. His favorite subject in school is science, which explains his interest in a future career as a phlebotomist. His scientific mind is also evident when asked about places he'd like to see.

He's a Michigan boy through and through, but he would consider a trip to Universal Studios so he could see Jurassic Park.

When he’s asked about the qualities he wants in a future forever family, Charles says he wants a nice dad, a mom, older siblings and maybe a dog. He has a pretty simple wish for his forever family. He says he wants to "eat dinner together at a giant table in our house."

Charles practices breathing techniques to help him manage his emotions and is working hard at expressing himself in positive ways. He can respond well to redirection with adults he trusts and respects.

In school, Charles does his best when he receives individual attention. Charles does a great job of focusing and maintaining his attention when he's talking about or engaging in an activity he enjoys. Charles' worker says "Charles can be kind, loving, and protective of those he know and has come to rely on." When he's in the right mood, Charles is known to initiate hugs, too!

Charles would do best with a forever family who has two experienced parents who can provide consistent structure and guidance. He does well with one on one attention and lots of supervision. His family must be willing to seek the services to meet Charles’ needs now and into the future. He also would do best as the youngest or only child in the family.
