'Work with what you got' : 16-year-old with albinism, no sweat glands, finds passion in Electronic Dance Music production

He can't be outside in hot temperatures, or go to a regular school. But he can produce song after song for his YouTube channel, Spotify, and SoundCloud.

FENNVILLE, Mich. — When Devin Groenewoud was a small child, his mom Kellie Groenewoud said he would get sick nearly every day.

"At about age five," said Kellie, "We discovered he had no sweat glands."

She said it is a rare condition and means being homeschooled in a temperature-controlled house is a necessity.

Devin also has ocular albinism, which makes it hard to see sometimes.

16-year-old Devin uses other senses to serve his passion: electronic dance music.

"The fun thing with music is you can make people happy with it," said Devin.

"You can bring in a lot of emotion. I just want to make people feel happy despite the hard times they're facing. That's the beautiful thing about music."

He produces music on his computer at home. He has a YouTube Channel, where he goes by the stage name Grownden, and his songs are available on Spotify and SoundCloud.

Devin has challenges with eyesight due to his albinism. His eyes sway back and forth, and he has trouble seeing.

"There's so many things you can't do because you don't have sweat glands," said Kellie. "These are obstacles we have to navigate through. It's rare to see somebody do something they love."

He has to produce music and perform in a temperature-controlled environment. He has done some virtual concerts that allow him to do what he loves in a way that will keep him healthy.

"Work with what you got," said Devin, "Push the limits."

Kellie said her son is an inspiration to the family. At first, she said she was not sure how he would find his way in the world with his limitations.

"You can have hopes and dreams for your kids," said Kellie, "But he has well-surpassed anything I've ever imagined.
