Food truck festival takes over downtown Grand Rapids

Over 35 food trucks were in downtown Grand Rapids as the official kick-off to the food truck season in West Michigan begins.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — On Sunday more than 35 different food trucks lined up in downtown Grand Rapids on Ottawa Avenue for the annual Roll N' Out Food Truck Festival. Hundreds of people from all over the state and country came to enjoy the annual food truck festival in Grand Rapids.

"I'm very excited to be here. It's a lot of different foods. It's a lot of different people out here," said attendee Dee Jones.

While the warm weather brought hundreds to downtown Grand Rapids, some say they were there just for the food.

"I think I want to get a gyro. I'm a big gyro person or a pizza. Pizza puffs, Chicago style foods, so some deep dish pizza or something like that," said Jones.

Sunday's event was the official kick-off to the food truck season in West Michigan according to festival organizers from the Grand Rapids Food Truck Association.

"I'm excited for this event. This to see people of different backgrounds, different ethnicities, different foods, different food companies, this from around the city, just have people come outside and be able to buy food. It's a good economic boost for the city. And it's a cool event and it's on a Sunday. So just to have people come outside on a Sunday. It's cool," said Jones.

People came from states all over the country including Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
A variety of different kinds of food trucks were downtown serving pizza, churros, hot dogs, barbecue, tacos, crepes and more. Jones said Sunday's food truck event helped build the sense of community in the city.

"There's been a lot of, you know, things going on around on our community sort of positive entity that we can get all of the positive events, you know, people buying food people being able to, you know, spend cash with our local businesses. So it's very good. I know food brings a lot of people in it helps to you know, build culture, it helps to build community. And you never know who you'll run into this at an event. So this is a cool thing for the city."

The next food truck event will be on Friday, May 24 during Grand Rapids' weekly Food Truck Fridays.
