WEST OLIVE, Mich. — Harbor Humane Society will be hosting an emergency Empty the Shelters event this weekend to help make room in the shelter.

Through Saturday, April 13, all adult dogs at Harbor Humane will have their adoption fees reduced to $25. All dogs come spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped.

The emergency adoption event was announced because the shelter has reached full capacity, according to Harbor Humane.

This comes as many shelters in the U.S. are facing capacity issues. In West Michigan, the Kent County Animal Shelter has also seen a surge in animal intake, especially with lost or surrendered pets.

Empty the Shelters is an event sponsored by the BISSELL Pet Foundation. Several times a year, shelter pets are able to be adopted for $50 or less through the Empty the Shelters events.

Empty the Shelters was first started in 2011. Since then, over 225,000 pets have found their forever homes through the program. Shelters in 47 states and Canada participate each year.

The Harbor Humane Empty the Shelters event only applies to adult dogs in their care. To learn more about the event or see what dogs Harbor Humane has for adoption, click here.
