Your DNA results can do more than find your ancestors

DNA Consultant Diahan Southard has advice on the criteria you should look for in a company that promises to give you DNA health information.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - If you haven't done it, you probably know someone who has -- DNA testing like 23andMe and Ancestry.com.

It's fun to learn about yourself, but once you get the results what do you do with them?

Why not contribute it to research? But be careful how you do it.

There is a genealogy conference going on right now in Grand Rapids. DNA Consultant Diahan Southard has advice on the criteria you should look for in a company that promises to give you DNA health information.

1. Make sure they are committed to your privacy

2. They have a scientific review board

3. And they tell you what they plan to do with your DAN data

Southard recommends Promethease.com. She says they are one of the most reputable companies. They’ve created a way for you to upload your data from all your different testing and dig deeper into your genetic health profile.

Southard says Promethease has an excellent privacy policy and is inexpensive. "Basically they've taken all the academic research that's done in these fields of health care they've compiled it and they are presenting it to you based on your DNA code these are the things that we see that you should watch out for or the things you don't need to worry about."

Southard will be at DeVos Place through Saturday at the National Genealogy Conference. There are over 80 exhibitors, including Ancestry.com.

If you can’t make it to the convention you can still contact Southard for advice on what to do with your DNA results.
