Another winter storm headed for West Michigan

Snow could transition to rain before ending as snow as a messy winter system arrives late Tuesday

West Michigan will deal with yet another winter storm beginning late Tuesday. However, warmer air will accompany the system complicating the forecast.

Everybody in West Michigan will see the precipitation start as snow. As a result, the afternoon and evening commute on Tuesday will become slick.

Southerly winds will pump warmer air overnight and early Wednesday. Temperatures will slowly climb above freezing from a Grand Rapids to Holland line, south. As the precipitation transitions from snow to rain, there could be a brief period with freezing drizzle.

A messy winter storm will provide snow which will transition to rain early Wednesday. Before the transition, there could be a brief period of freezing drizzle. Precipitation will end as light snow as temperatures fall Wednesday afternoon.

Light rain will likely fall for several hours Wednesday morning, especially south of I-96. Because of a relatively cold stretch, ground temperatures are well below freezing. As the rain begins to fall, there is still the danger for icing on pavement. Wednesday morning's commute will become treacherous, even in our southern counties that will be dealing with mostly rain. Many outlying school districts that rely on dirt roads will be heading back-to-bed Wednesday morning with this set-up.

From about Muskegon to Greenville, north precipitation will fall almost exclusively as snow. As much as 6-8 inches of snow are possible in these locations between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Colder air will wrap around the system by Wednesday afternoon as temperatures will begin to tumble. As the storm departs, precipitation will end as some light snow.

There will be little rest for the weary. Another storm is expected to impact the region on Thursday bringing more snow followed by more Arctic air.
