Ferris State University professor suddenly passes away, is now being honored by many

“He always took the time to just ask how I was doing and to make sure I was having a good day,” said student Abigail Proksch.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Students and faculty at Ferris State University gathered together to remember a professor who passed away suddenly after teaching at the university for more than 20 years.

Dr. Paul Klatt was known for his expertise, his love for birds and the way he helped students soar.

From Klatt’s famous Osprey Web Cam to being a nationally respected bird expert, he was well-known and well-loved by many.

“He's someone that touched many lives across campus,” said Professor Beth Zimmer, PhD.

Klatt was highly respected at the university and known to have a fun teaching style.

“He had certain little things that we all remember him by,” Zimmer said. "He had a small little truck that drove by all the time and he has the Osprey Webcam, so everyone knows him for birds. We called him 'The Birdman.'”

Klatt taught students in the College of Arts and Sciences and Education.

Since his childhood, he was interested in birds and he went on to win national recognition as an expert in the study of birds. Students said he left an indelible mark on the university.

“He always took the time to just ask how I was doing and to make sure I was having a good day,” said student Abigail Proksch. "He always made sure that he was there for me and others.”

During the university’s weekend commencement, a seat was saved for the beloved professor with a red and black checkered vest, a pair of binoculars and a white flower.

Many students wore red cardinal pins in honor of his memory.

The legacy he leaves on the university will long be remembered through the countless students he touched, programs he started, and the birdcam that many enjoy.

“He was wonderful, he always wanted to cheer you up,” said student Paige Hudecek. "He's going to be missed. He was really great and I am sad that he's gone.”

The Paul Klatt Memorial Osprey Webcam Project has been made in his memory, and contributions are being accepted.
