Michigan State Police confirm a trooper was shot Friday afternoon during a traffic stop in Lake Township in Missaukee County.

The trooper was from the Houghton Lake Post.

Police say early investigation indicates the trooper stopped a car with three people in it, and one them fired on the trooper.

The trooper returned fire but was hit serval times, according to MSP. The trooper was taken to the the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the gunman has died. The other people involved where taken into police custody.

Police say incident remains under investigation and the involved trooper is not being identified at this time.
