South Haven man facing slew of charges after missing 14-year-old found in his home

If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — A South Haven man is facing nine charges, including human trafficking, after a missing 14-year-old girl was found in his home Thursday.

The teen went missing from the Seattle area on Jan. 6. Investigators believe that she voluntarily left her home using ride-share services to travel to South Haven to meet 30-year-old Keith Freerksen.

Police were able to track down Freerksen using the ride-sharing service that the teen used to travel to Michigan.

Freerksen is now facing nine charges in relation to the missing teen, including:

  • Two counts of human trafficking of a minor for commercial sexual activity
  • Two counts of using a computer to commit a crime
  • One count of criminal sexual conduct 1st degree
  • Three counts of criminal sexual conduct 3rd degree
  • One count accosting a child for immoral purposes

If convicted, Freerksen could be sentenced to life in prison for the criminal sexual conduct first degree charge. The other felony charges can carry sentences between four and 20 years in prison.

Freerksen has a previous conviction of possession of child pornography out of Florida dating back to 2017, according to Michigan's Sex Offender Registry.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office will be holding a joint press conference at 12:15 p.m. Friday to share details about the case.
