Teenager dead following police chase in Barry County

A 16-year-old boy was killed when he crashed into a tree after refusing to stop for a deputy.

BARRY COUNTY, Mich. — A teenager is dead after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a tree during a police chase, the Barry County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) said.

The chase happened around 10:20 p.m. on April 23 in Barry County, according to police.

BCSO says that a deputy was involved in a police chase of a vehicle on Coats Grove Road near M-66 Highway.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as a 16-year-old boy from the Woodland area, allegedly lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree on Coats Grove Road.

The boy was thrown from the car and taken by EMS to Corewell Health Pennock in Hastings. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigation of the crash is being conducted by the Michigan State Police and is currently open and ongoing.
