Kent County's special education center programs under review

Grand Rapids Public Schools' recently announced that an independent evaluator will asses their special education center programs.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Public Schools' special education center programs will soon be under review.

Superintendents in Kent County called for the review at a meeting on Thursday, April 26 to verify that the programming meets student needs and reflects the highest quality of services and programs that are offered across the state.

According to Kent ISD Superintendent Ron Caniff, there have been recent complaints about the programming and GRPS and he believes an independent review by a third-party evaluator will help forge a clear path moving forward, benchmark services and help them get better.

Grand Rapids operates special education “center” programming on behalf of Kent ISD and the other 19 districts it serves. Kent ISD, which provides oversight over the programming, owns most of the facilities where special education center programs take place.

Superintendents and the Kent ISD board recently approved renovations to the Lincoln special education campus that are estimated to cost $10,348,750 over the next two years.
