Drug Take Back Day to safely dispose of unwanted medications on Saturday

Multiple locations in West Michigan will be taking your unwanted medications.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As part of the nationwide National Drug Take Back Day, several locations in West Michigan will be accepting your unused or expired medications to ensure they're disposed of safely.

On Saturday, you can take your medications to participating health centers, hospitals and police departments in Kent County, Ottawa County and Montcalm County.

The event is being held as a partnership between Priority Health, Corewell Health and the Kent County Health Department. It coincides with the 26th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which is being recognized across the U.S.

“Last year, Michigan saw far too many avoidable opioid-related deaths,” said Colleen Lane, M.D., medical director, addiction medicine, Corewell Health. “So many of these deaths were related to prescription medications. By dropping off unused medications, you are playing a critical role in keeping your family and community safe.”

You can drop off your medications from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Corewell Health Care Center, Cutlerville—80 68th St. SE, Grand Rapids
  • Priority Health—3111 Leonard St. NE, Grand Rapids
  • Kent County Health Department—700 Fuller Ave. NE, Grand Rapids
  • Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital—8333 Felch St., Zeeland
  • Corewell Health Greenville Hospital Family Medicine—1202 W. Oak St., Greenville
  • East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department—770 Lakeside Drive SE

There will be officers with the Kent County Sheriff's Office and Grand Rapids Police Department present to make sure the medications are being disposed of properly.

All Michigan State Police posts will also be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 as another drop-off location. You can bring expired, unused or unwanted medication. MSP said syringes, liquids, patches and inhalers are not accepted.

If you have old or unneeded medications, you are encouraged to bring them to a drug take-back event. The health department does not advise flushing or throwing them away.

Drug Take Back Day runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27.
