GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — He can only be described as "the most happy kid" by his parents, Clay Duba and Dominique Tol.
"He was non-verbal, but he communicated with us in so many other ways," said Dominique.
"If he came in the room and met you, you would think he thought you guys were best friends," said Clay.
Born in 2007, Caleb had hydranencephaly, a rare condition which causes neurological and physical impairments.
He passed away in 2018.
Although Caleb is gone, his parents continue his memory with their organization called Caleb Smiles. It's a West Michigan nonprofit that helps provide fun opportunities for children with disabilities who may not have the resources to participate otherwise.
"We kind of saw a more narrow window of need for things that insurance doesn't cover, but things that are just fun, fun for kids, that bring smiles," said Dominique. "Some things can be a financial burden to families, and so that's kind of where we wanted to focus what we're doing with Caleb Smiles."
Walk for Smiles
Caleb Smiles will hold their third annual Walk for Smiles on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Millennium Park in Walker.
It's a memorial walk and trunk-or-treat.
According to the organization's website, Halloween was one of Caleb's family's favorite holidays together because of the creative, fun costumes they would make with his wheelchair. Costumes for this event are encouraged, organizers say.
Registration for the event closes Friday, Oct. 11.
According to the website, registration includes a t-shirt, food and beverages and more along the route.
All funds raised will cover the cost of the walk, with the rest going back to the organization to help other families.
