'Two bloody bodies, and no explanation' | Two people found dead in the middle of the street in Grand Rapids

"It really is one of those things that from the beginning it was a mystery," said GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Several people called 911 Monday morning to let police know they discovered a man and a woman bloodied in the street in two separate areas.

The whole crime scene spans about four blocks just east of Division Avenue SE along the edges of Burton Heights and Garfield Park neighborhoods.

Grand Rapids Police found one person lying in the roadway at Melville Street SE and Horton Avenue SE. A few blocks away, a similar scene at Melville Street Southeast & Francis Avenue Southeast.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said it's too early to tell how they were killed.

"Tragically, we have two bloody bodies in the street and we don't have an explanation," GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said.

"It appears to be very targeted. Very personal in nature, and I don't believe that anyone has anything to be fearful of."

The killing happened around 11:30 a.m., and the chief is confident someone saw something that will help bring the suspect into custody.

"This is not something that this neighborhood is going to tolerate. I'm thankful for the support of this neighborhood coming out to talk to me," Winstrom said.

"It really is one of those things that from the beginning it was a mystery. I care. We care. And I think with everyone's help we're going to find the answer."

Police officers are now going door-to-door to try to find surveillance video, witnesses or any other evidence that could help them figure out what happened.

Detectives have identified the man and woman who were killed but haven't yet notified their families as of 5 p.m. Monday.

Hours later and just five or six doors down from where one of the victims was found, someone shot and killed a young man in the 2000 block of Horton Avenue Southeast

Police said they can't yet say with certainty if this shooting death is connected to the two people found dead in the same neighborhood earlier Monday.

"It's a very good chance they are connected," GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said. "So the experienced investigator in me says that it's most likely related, but it's possible It isn't. But I'm guessing it is."

Monday night authorities confirmed they identified a vehicle of interest in the incident. They towed the vehicle, a black jeep, away to process and investigate if it is connected to the incident or anyone involved.
