Baldwin hosts remote control jet rally

BALDWIN, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 400 acre field best known for a big motorcycle event will be buzzing this weekend with a different sound. The West Michigan RC jet rally started Thursday at the Baldwin Municipal Airport.

The jet shot is hosted by members of the Lake County Modelers and Flyers Club and helps promote the hobby by showing off remote controlled turbine jet planes. Some fly as fast as 200 miles an hour.

The event is expected to attract pilots from around the Midwest. The airport manager and others in Baldwin are hopeful the venue will become better known for all the events that take place there, not just the big spring motorcycle rally.

"Now we have the Blessing of the Bikes in May, the jet rally in June, the RC expo in July, in August the ORV expo, in September the sail plane expo, so we hope to have something out here every month," said Mac McClellan.

The jet rally is free for spectators. The airport is on M-37 just south of Baldwin.
