Witnesses hear explosion, see flames as Kent County deputies find body inside car

Witnesses told deputies they heard the sound of an explosion as the Jeep caught fire. First responders found the body of a 42-year-old Kentwood man inside.

BYRON CENTER, Mich. — A 42-year-old Kentwood man lost his life in an apparent car fire Tuesday morning. 

The Kent County Sheriff's Office said just before 8 a.m., a Jeep was headed eastbound on 68th Street near Clay Avenue in Byron Township when witnesses heard an explosion. 

Deputies and the Cutlerville Fire Department rushed to the scene and found the Jeep in flames. 

First responders found the driver dead inside. He was identified as a 42-year-old Kentwood man. 

The KCSO, Cutlerville Fire, Michigan State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are looking into what led up to this incident.  

It's not clear at this point the cause and the origin of the fire. Investigators are working to find that out.
