Cass County Sheriff says he's not seeking reelection

The sheriff's career at the department started in 1987.

CASS COUNTY, Mich. — Since 1987, Richard Behnke has worked for the Cass County Sheriff's Department.

He started out as a Cass County Deputy, then served as Supervisor of the Dispatch Center. Then he became Undersheriff for 13 years. 

For more than 8 years, he's served as the sheriff. 

After talking with his family, he said it was time to begin another chapter in his life. 

Behnke said it's been an honor and a privilege to work with many talented and dedicated people during his career. 

Sheriff Behnke won't seek reelection and a third term as the county's law enforcement leader. 

He doesn't have any plans as to what's next, but did share he will continue living in Cass County. He said he wants to serve his community in some fashion. 

The primary election is Aug. 6 where voters will select their candidates from their respective parties. 

So far, there are three Republican candidates running for sheriff: Jeff Glaser, Stephen Harman and Clint Roach.
