Corewell Health patients may experience trouble filling prescriptions after cyber attack

In the meantime, patients may be filling paper prescriptions instead of having them sent electronically.

Corewell Health announced Friday night that one of their key vendors experienced a cyber-attack. The attack prompted health systems, pharmacies and insurance companies across the country to disconnect from the vendor to prevent additional issues.

Corewell said they usually rely on this vendor's service to send prescriptions to pharmacies electronically. For the time being they said they may not be able to do this and will need to fill prescriptions on paper instead.

What Corewell said patients need to know:

  • This is a nationwide issue.
  • Expect delays at the pharmacy.
  • Some patients will experience no problems filling their prescription while others may experience delays or other issues.
  • You may be asked to pay cash at the pharmacy. If so, we suggest you ask the pharmacy if they have a discount card.
  • If you must pay cash for your prescription, follow your insurance company’s directions for how to seek reimbursement.
  • Your pharmacy might have history of what you have paid for your prescription in the past. If this is the case, they may ask you to pay the co-pay you have paid in the past. This possibility will depend on the pharmacy you use, the prescription you need filled and your insurance coverage.
  • Your pharmacy may partially fill your prescription and have you return for the remainder following resolution of the issue.
  • If your new prescription or refill can wait until next week, you might want to drop off your prescription at the pharmacy and tell them you will wait to pick it up until next week.
  • If your prescription is for a controlled substance, your physician must follow the law on how to provide it to you. They will either give you a printed prescription on special paper and sign it or they will call it into the pharmacy.
  • Due to the complexity in this issue, we recommend you work directly with a pharmacy where you have an established relationship.
  • If you cannot fill your prescription and you are experiencing an emergency, call 9- 1-1 or proceed to the nearest emergency room.
