Creston Neighborhood Association helping those who cannot get water themselves during boil advisory

The organization is focusing on those who lack mobility to pick up water from the City of Grand Rapids' water distribution in the wake of the water main break.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Creston Neighborhood Association is helping others by collecting and donating water to those affected by the water main break that has caused thousands to be without clean and safe water.

The association said it plans to help at least 70 households in and around their neighborhood that have limited to no access to transportation or mobility to the city’s water distribution.

Creston Neighborhood Association board member Danah Montgomery said the idea came about after she and others saw a need.

"A lot of people have kids at home. There's folks who are living with a disability who might not be able to go out and get water. There are folks who don't have gas to be able to wait in lines at the distribution sites, there's a tons of different reasons why folks might not be able to go out and get their own water,” said Montgomery.

Executive director Gregg Hampshire said volunteers have been joining in on the effort to make sure the water gets to the people who need it.

"Water is the greatest gift that we have. And the most important resource we have,” said Hampshire. “We've had an overwhelming number of neighbors reach out to us going, hey, I'll pick up some water, I'll drop it off at my neighbors or even this morning. I heard from a neighbor who's like I live in an area with a lot of seniors that aren't mobile, how do we get them connected with water and this drop off service that CNA has been providing?”

The support continued as the day progressed. Hours after 13 ON YOUR SIDE spoke to the organization, Meijer grocery delivered more than 70 cases of water to the association to be passed out to families.

“It's really cool to see when we're under any form of crisis, how our neighborhood comes together, and chips in and works with each other to get it accomplished. So huge shout out to Meijer for sending this truck of water to help us out,” said board member Nick Curtis.

The association is still collecting donations and delivering to those in need. If you need water, you can visit the association's Facebook page and fill out a form or call them. If you would like to donate water or money, you can also message or call the association.
