A 1-year-old Detroit boy is in critical condition after possible ingestion of opioids, police confirmed.

The incident took place Monday night on the 9600 block of Coyle on the city's west side. Police were first called to the residence, but were redirected to a local hospital after notice that the child may have ingested some kind of opioid drug, said Officer Holly Lowe.

The boy was in critical condition as of about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, but police could not yet confirm whether he had ingested opioids or another drug as of Tuesday morning.

“It was believed that the child had ingested some type of narcotics,” Lowe said. “I believe they do some type of blood test, but I can’t confirm exactly what.”

The caregiver who accompanied the child was not treated. It was not immediately clear whether the caregiver was a parent or not.

No one has been taken into custody yet, Lowe said.
