Family identifies woman found on US-131, remembers her as 'full of life and laughter'

Mavi Garcia said her sister Ruby loved to travel, was dedicated to her work and enjoyed being with her family.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — On Friday, a body was found on the roadway at southbound US-131 and Leonard, according to the Michigan State Police.

Deputies said troopers were dispatched to the scene around 11:40 p.m. where they discovered a dead woman with apparent gunshot wounds.

On Sunday, the victim was identified by MSP as a 25-year-old woman from Grand Rapids.

Mavi Garcia has identified the victim as her sister, Ruby Garcia, on a GoFundMe page for her funeral.

"Anything helps, and we appreciate the help," Mavi said on the page. "Thank you to everyone that has supported us through these tough times, we appreciate all the love. Forever Ruby’s World."

In a statement to 13 ON YOUR SIDE, Mavi said Ruby was a "great person all around" and would "brighten up the room with her beautiful smile."

She said Ruby loved to travel, was dedicated to her work and enjoyed being with her family.

Mavi said Ruby was a daughter, sister, aunt and friend whose loss has affected many.

"She will be remembered as being full of life and laughter, those who were around her would know she was silly and made everyone laugh... Her life was taken too soon. She deserved to live life, travel the world, have kids and follow her dreams," Mavi said.

Michigan State Police say they now have a person of interest in custody in this case.
