Dozens of tow trucks lined Eastern Avenue outside Brother Love Towing to show their support for Gerald Love on Tuesday, Nov. 14, just a day after he was shot and killed.
Love was allegedly out on a work call Monday night when he was shot multiple times. Grand Rapids Police say the murder is still under investigation and have not yet named a suspect.
Jeff Whaley of Truthful Towing in Wyoming heard the news and immediately went to Facebook to reach out to fellow tow companies to find a way to show their support.
Within a matter of hours at least a dozen different businesses, some as far as Ionia, agreed to all meet outside Brother Love Towing in Grand Rapids to show their support to the family.
Some of these men barely knew Love, if they even knew him at all. But Whaley said the tow truck family in West Michigan is a strong one.
"We are not in competition; we are a comradery. We didn't lose a competitor last night---we lost a family member," Whaley said.
"He's a loving person, everyone loved this guy," said Carlos Rodriguez. "I'm really shocked that this happened to this guy because he didn't deserve this at all. I'm praying for him and his family."
Police believe Love was targeted, but there isn't a threat to the public.
