GRCC gets check from Restaurant Week

Money goes to school's culinary program

Gravity Taphouse and Grille participates in restaurant week

The success of restaurant week can be partly measured by an annual event at Grand Rapids Community College.

On Tuesday, restaurants that participated in restaurant week presented a check to the school's culinary program.

Six students also received scholarships to attend the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education.

"Tourism is hot right now in this area and our numbers are going through the roof." said Doug Small, fron Experience Grand Rapids. "And with that there's more growth, meaning more restaurants, more hotel rooms coming on board and when you have that it's going to put more pressure on your work force out there. It's something that we're already talking about as a group and as a local industry and how we can best get involved in workforce development so we don't have a major problem as we continue to grow in finding workers for the jobs that we need."

The event was held at the Heritage Restaurant located in the GRCC Applied Technology Center.

Proceeds from Restaurant Week have now provided more than $126,000 for the culinary education scholarship fund.
