Clock ticking on effort to change recreational marijuana law

The Lame Duck Session ends on Dec. 20, so it's crunch time for legislators to get their last minute bills through the House and Senate chambers.

LANSING, Mich. -Time is running out in Lansing on an effort to dramatically change the law that legalized recreational marijuana in Michigan. A super majority of votes is needed to pass the changes.

With the "Lame Duck session" nearing its end, legislators are feverishly putting bills through in hopes of getting them passed before the session is over. The House met on Wednesday and was in session until 3 a.m. Thursday morning and it's likely the Senate could do something similar.

One of the more controversial bills right now is one which completely change Proposal One. If you'll remember, Michiganders voted for Proposal One back on November 6, legalizing recreational marijuana and allowing Michiganders to grow their own plants inside their home. Many political analysts say it's very unlikely the Senate has enough votes, which would be a super majority to pass the bill, but the Senate Majority Leader and the bill's sponsor, Arlan Meekhof says it's still on the table.

"As I've dealt with other state leaders on this, they have all said that they wished they would have done something different with the homegrow operation and many of those of my friends have said that they were supportive of recreational marijuana and this piece they missed and should have done it better and we're hoping to do that," Meekhof said. "If it's going to be in play it has to be taken up today."

If the bill is brought up in Senate chambers Thursday and does garner enough votes then it's up to the House to take up this issue on Dec. 20, the last day of Lame Duck. If it's not brought up Thursday, that bill dies.
