MUSKEGON, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) said Tuesday that heat has been restored to all facilities following two outages due to the winter storm.

Correctional facilities in Muskegon and Ionia reported issues with their heating during the weekend and into this week.

The Muskegon Correctional Facility administration building, including the visitation room, was without heat over the weekend, according to MDOC.

At the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility in Ionia, two units were struggling to maintain heat on Tuesday. Temporary heaters were installed until it was able to fixed.

Heat has since been restored to all facilities, MDOC said.

This comes after parts of West Michigan got slammed by a winter storm over the weekend, getting over a foot of snowfall in some areas. Feels-like temperatures have plummeted below zero overnight and remain well below freezing during the day.

"Our maintenance/physical plant teams have done a great job over the last few days dealing with the weather and the challenges it brings for operating our facilities, and we are thankful for their efforts, along with all our staff working in these extreme temperatures," said MDOC representative Kyle Kaminski in a release.

In addition to the heating outages, a water main break at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater happened Tuesday and was later restored.
