EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University is inviting Spartans from across the globe to light a luminary in honor of the victims of the tragic mass shooting on campus nearly one year ago.

The shooting took the lives of three students—Arielle Anderson, Alexandria Verner and Brian Fraser—and left five others wounded. Since then, the university has increased their safety measures and gun laws have been passed in Michigan.

Nearly a year later, the community is remembering those impacted by the shooting.

On Feb. 13 at 8 p.m., Spartans are invited to post photos of their luminaries or a message of support on social media using the hashtag #SpartansTogether to join the community in remembrance.

Luminaries can be picked up at alumni chapters across the country, the main MSU campus or the East Lansing community while supplies last from now through Feb. 13.

Campus pick-up locations are:

  • MSU Library circulation desk
  • Student Services Building, Room 150
  • MSU Union Welcome Desk
  • IM Circle, IM East and IM West welcome desks
  • Neighborhood residence hall service centers

East Lansing pick-up locations are:

  • Common Ground United Resiliency – 1504 E. Grand River Ave
  • East Lansing Hannah Community Center – 819 Abbot Road
  • East Lansing Public Library – 950 Abbot Road

The Associated Students of Michigan State University are hosting a luminary pick-up and decorating event on Feb. 12 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Gilbert Pavilion in the Breslin Student Events Center.

If you can't pick up a luminary, there are ways to make your own. They're made of a white paper bag and a green, battery-operated LED tealight candle.
