WATERVILET, Mich. - Five people were safely pulled out of the Paw Paw River in Berrien County on Sunday afternoon.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office says that they responded to a report of two missing tubers on the river. During the search for those tubers, rescue personnel found three unrelated kayakers and tubers who had fallen into the water and needed to be rescued.

They also located the initial two tubers.

Additionally, during the search, one of the first responders also fell into the water when his kayak overturned. He was able to get out of the water on his own.

A 69-year-old man from Eau Claire, a 67-year-old woman from Eau Claire, a 46-year-old man from Chicago, a 14-year-old boy from Kalamazoo and a 15-year-old boy from Kalamazoo were all safely pulled out of the water.

Some of the people were wearing life jackets and some were not.

The Sheriff's Office is reminding people to wear life jackets when out on the water, especially with current conditions of high waters and fast moving currents due to recent heavy rains.
