Michigan lawmakers safe, sheltering in place as mob storms Capitol in D.C.

Senators were being evacuated. Some House lawmakers tweeted they were sheltering in place in their offices.

MICHIGAN, USA — The U.S. Capitol building was placed on lockdown, as pro-Trump supporters marched through evacuated and restricted areas of the building Wednesday. The demonstration forced a halt to congressional deliberations over challenges to Joe Biden's Electoral College victory. 

Senators were being evacuated. Some House lawmakers tweeted they were sheltering in place in their offices.

West Michigan Republican Peter Meijer was in Washington, D.C. Wednesday and tweeted that he was safe just after 3:30 p.m. He added later in the day that the president needs to do more. 

U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow also tweeted they were safe and sheltering in a secure location.  

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton called on President Donald Trump in a tweet to take action.  

Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga also tweeted when the initial breach began.  

There were serval former and current Michigan lawmakers who responded to the situation in Washington, D.C. but were not in the capitol when it occurred.  Here are some of their responses that were posted to social media.
