WHEATFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say two children have died and their father seriously hurt after he lost control of the car in which they were riding and struck a tree on Interstate 96 southeast of Lansing.

Ingham County sheriff's officials say witnesses saw the 29-year-old man from the Detroit suburb of Romulus driving aggressively Friday evening in Wheatfield Township. Police say he was trying to pass other vehicles on the shoulder, when his vehicle left the freeway backward and hit the tree.

Officials say his 9-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter, who were from Grand Rapids, died at the scene. The father was taken to a hospital.

The investigation includes determining whether alcohol played a role the crash.
