MSP says white van in surveillance photo suspected in attempted abduction has been cleared

Troopers say a white woman was driving, and a white man with a mustache, estimated to be between 40 and 50 years old, was a passenger.

OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. — The Michigan State Police are searching for two people who allegedly tried to abduct a minor in Oceana County.

Troopers say the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Sunday in two different locations. The first area is in the 7300 block of N 88th Avenue, and the second location is the 6800 block of N 92nd Avenue.

There were allegedly two people in a white minivan with dark windows who attempted to pick up a minor at these locations. Troopers say a white woman was driving, and a white man with a mustache, estimated to be between 40 and 50 years old, was a passenger.

13 ON YOUR SIDE spoke with a witness to one of the attempts. Jeff Finney said he was dropping off his grandson at a friend's house when he saw a van.

"She come up running to me saying, Jeff, Jeff, that guy just tried taking me in. He was running after me," said Finney.

Finney said he chased the vehicle after speaking with the victim.

"I flew down the road Chase, the guy pulled him over.  I said, What are you doing chasing little kids? He's like, Oh, I was chasing the dog," said Finney.

The young victim, whose mother didn't want her to be identified because she is a minor, said she was playing with her dog in her driveway when a van pulled up.

"The van stopped and the man got out of the car and he tried to grab me but my grandparents honked. And when they honked it scared the guy off," said the victim.

The two people are wanted for questioning in this investigation.

At 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Michigan State Police shared a similar incident was reported in Montague.

Authorities shared a photo of a white van. At 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Michigan State Police said the van in the surveillance photo was cleared and is not believed to be the suspect vehicle.

MSP says this is a good reminder that if you see suspicious activity, you should call police.

"Be alert for things that don't look normal, and make sure that your children know that a strange adult approaching them is probably not normal, they should not engage in that interaction," said Lt. Robert Davis.

Anyone with information on the vehicle or the occupants is asked to contact the Michigan State Police Hart Post at 231-873-2171.
