Muskegon Township Aldi store set to open in March 2024

Brian Werschem, planner and zoning administrator for the township, said they have been "working really hard to continue growth" in that corridor.

MUSKEGON CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Grocery store Aldi is set to open a new location in Muskegon Charter Township on E Apple Avenue.

The current timeline, according to township leaders, puts the opening for the store at March 2024.

The location is the former Plumb's store, which closed in 2017. Another grocery, Great Lakes Fresh Market, occupied the space until 2018.

"About five years ago, when the previous store that was in there, Great Lakes Fresh Market closed, it really left a vulnerable part of our population without an option for groceries, let alone affordable groceries," said Jennifer Hodges, Muskegon Township Supervisor. "So, the excitement directly in that neighborhood is... I can't compare it to anywhere else, just the community as a whole. This location is right. It's a quick step off the highway. It's a main thoroughfare, so it's going to be a very positive impact for a lot of families."

Brian Werschem, planner and zoning administrator for the township, said they have been "working really hard to continue growth" in that corridor. He highlighted the VA clinic opening early next year and pointed out new spaces still available to businesses.

Currently, Hodges said Aldi just finished its structural renovations and now is working on interior construction.

"The structure was in a bit of disrepair, because it's quite an old structure," said Hodges. "That included a new roof and also new parking lot designed the way they would like it."
