Chief chosen to lead Muskegon Heights Police Department

The Muskegon Heights City Council wants to make their interim police chief, Dr. Joseph Thomas, the permanent chief.

The Muskegon Heights City Council wants to make their interim police chief, Dr. Joseph Thomas, the permanent chief.

Tuesday, Nov. 1, the council interviewed three finalists. In a close vote, they decided to offer the job to Dr. Thomas.

The other contenders included Michigan State Police Lieutenant Edward Viverette and current Muskegon Heights Police Sgt. Maurice Sain.

Dr. Thomas was named interim chief 10 months ago.

“We don't have time to be average,” he told council during his interview. “Muskegon Heights needs leadership, understanding and direction.Somebody to motivate people. I think I can bring that to the city," Thomas said.

State Police Lieutenant Viverette was second in the voting.
