5-year-old child shot dead in Newaygo County; Michigan State Police investigating

It is not clear what led up to the shooting. However, it is confirmed that a 5-year-old was killed.

NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. — Michigan State Police were at the scene of a home in Newaygo County on Monday. Officials confirmed a 5-year-old child is dead.

Troopers from the Hart post were dispatched to a home in the area of West 68th Street and Bingham Avenue around 3:25 p.m.

"It is a very preliminary investigation. Right now, I don't have a lot of details, other than we do have a child that is deceased from an apparent gunshot wound," said Lt. Michelle Robinson with the Michigan State Police.

Troopers found the child dead from a gunshot wound at the home.

It is not clear what led up to the shooting. Lt. Robinson said there was no threat to the public.

"I'm hoping to gather some more information but troopers are on scene investigating," said Robinson. "And we just ask viewers to keep this family in your thoughts this evening."

Lt. Robinson said she hopes the community will continue to comfort the child's family in the coming days.

"Hold your children tight tonight and give them an extra hug. Because this family is grieving," Lt. Robinson said.

The investigation is still ongoing.
