What caused a fire to rip through multiple Muskegon buildings, damaging businesses

The fire began Saturday on Pine Street.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Missing roofs, damaged walls and debris on the ground remains after a fire ripped through two Muskegon buildings Saturday night.

"It was pretty scary for a minute there,” said neighbor Christopher Johnson.

Deputy Chief Jay Paulson says it was originally reported that the fire started at Bad Boys Bail Bond, a nearby business, but it actually started on the roof of a vacant lot next to that.

It all began while crews were repairing the roof of that vacant lot with a process called "hot roof." Still, he says, officials are figuring out exactly what in that process caused the flames to spark.

The fire destroyed two buildings, including a bar, and left smoke and water damages to nearby buildings.

That included C and C Floor Covering, which the owner says is the oldest commercial building.

Johnson said it's sad to see how much the businesses was damaged.

"It's sad, they are good guys. I hope they can get the building fixed up,” he said.

Luckily, the business owner says he can move his operations to their previous location until the building is fixed.

While the damage is bad, Deputy Paulson says it could have been much worse had his and other crews not worked quickly.
